Ripped Fabric

Torn Fabric with Frayed Edges

Ripped fabric with ragged edges and loose threads. Use the torn edges to frame titles, thumbnails and posters, or composite them onto a costume, flag or curtain to show damage after a fight, stunt or creature attack. 3D artists can start from fabric materials instead.

Which resolution fits?

Download the transparent PNG at SD for a tear on a background extra, or the high-resolution version, up to 8K, when the threads need to hold up close to camera or in print.

How to add a rip to a costume

Attach the tear to a track of the costume, then step through the shot. Where the actor twists, keyframe the Mesh Warp so the cloth stretches with them.
Grade the torn piece to the costume's color, then match the grain and sharpness of your footage.
Add a soft, dark shadow under the torn edges so the flaps lift off the garment. For burned clothing, combine it with scorch marks.
In stylized edits, use a torn piece as a track matte so the next shot appears through the rip. Ready-made animated versions are in matte transitions.
