Planets and Space Backdrops

Hang a giant planet over an alien horizon, or set one behind a spaceship in orbit. There are water, lava and ice planets, planet rings to wrap around them, and stellar objects for the deep background of sci-fi skies.

Category information

How big should the file be?

Planets come as PNGs up to 8K. A planet is a smooth, round shape, so softness shows the moment you scale up a small file. Pick the biggest size for one that fills the sky or that you slowly push in on.

How to add a planet to a sky

Rotate the planet so its lit side faces the same light source as everything else in your shot.
For orbit shots against black space, let the night side fall to black, and add a thin glow along the lit edge for atmosphere.
Mask the half of a ring that passes behind the planet, so the ring wraps around it rather than lying on top.
If a stellar object comes on black, set it to Screen in the After Effects Mode column to drop the black out.
Render any 3D ships or moons under a matching space HDRI, so they share a sun with the planet.
